Did you know low back pain is associated with a weaker grip
Grip strength

Most attorneys think of chronic low back pain (CLBP) as a “spine problem.” But research shows it can also affect fine motor skills, coordination, and overall function,  not just lifting or bending. I’ve seen this recently in a client after testing their hand strength and scoring in the below average range after suffering from years of chronic low back pain. The more patients reduce their activity due to chronic back pain, the more they decrease their daily activities including use of their hands. Studies have shown an association between hand grip strength and chronic low back pain.

Why is this important in litigation?

Functional losses may extend beyond the back, impacting grip strength, hand coordination, and daily activities that juries and adjusters understand.

These subtle deficits often support accurate medical damages valuation when properly documented in a Life Care Plan or Functional Capacity Evaluation.

Standard imaging (like MRIs) may look “normal,” but motor-control changes are harder to dispute and speak directly to real-world ability.

Chronic low back pain is more than a diagnosis — it’s a condition that can limit everyday tasks in ways that directly affect employability, independence, and quality of life.
